Ghana faces a double burden of disease. There is high prevalence of communicable diseases, including malaria, HIV/Aids, tuberculosis (TB) and diarrhea as well as a rising incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular disease, cancers, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes mellitus and sickle cell diseases. Each year, over 86,000 Ghanaians are estimated to die from lifestyle diseases with over half of these being under the age of 70.
The Ministry of Health has drafted a national policy, focused on prevention and control of the four major NCDs: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancers and chronic respiratory disease. The policy covers five key areas: primary prevention; early detection and care; healthcare system strengthening; research and development; and surveillance of NCDs and associated risk factors. Interventions being put in place to address the growth in NCDs include public awareness campaigns, screening programs, promotion of healthy living and periodic medical checks.
